Dragon Timber - Fan Spotlight
I was born and lived the first 25 years of my life in Widnes which happened to coincide with the glory years of the club. My first job was at Montague L Meyer, which was a big timber yard in Widnes at the time, and that was the start of my life in the timber trade. My job took me to Yorkshire in 1988 and I have lived here ever since.
I worked for Dragon Timber for 20 years before I bought it in 2016. Since then we have had Brexit, Covid and now war with Russia who were one of our main suppliers!! If it wasn’t for bad luck I would have no luck at all!
The landlord of the warehouse that I rent is on the committee at Leeds Rhino’s and over the years has taken great delight in bringing the trophies they have won and putting them on my desk with comments such as “You won’t have seen these before”. He is a relative of the late Bill Ramsey who used to play for Widnes, he came in to see me not long before his death, and he said that of all the clubs he played for he had the best time when he played for Widnes. It’s just that sort of club I suppose, it gets under your skin.
I know Eddie Kilgannon, the club's assistant coach, he has called on me in his business capacity as a timber importer for many years visiting my Widnes enclave in Leeds regularly. We have a good catch-up whenever we speak.
My son has attended the matches with me ever since he was old enough and it is a source of great pride to me that even when all his schoolmates were crowing about The Bulls and The Rhinos back in the day when they were winning everything and we were not that he never swayed from supporting Widnes. His name can be found along with mine on the shirt that was produced after covid with the names of those who forwent their season ticket money the year that the season was curtailed. We went to watch Widnes in Toulouse a few years back, and it was one of the best times in my life, we even won, hurrah!!
So that’s it in a nutshell.
Kind regards
